The National Awareness Campaign on the Risks of Tropical Weather Conditions and Tsunami Waves commenced in South Al Batinah Governorate

The activities of the National Awareness Campaign on the Risks of Tropical Weather Conditions and Tsunami Waves commenced today in South Al Batinah Governorate under the slogan “Your Awareness for Your Safety.”

The campaign is being implemented by the Civil Aviation Authority, represented by the National Multi Hazard Early Warning Center, in partnership with the National Committee for Emergency Management, the Ministry of Information, the Civil Defence and Ambulance Authority, and in coordination with the Office of the Governor of South Al Batinah, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Social Development, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries Wealth and Water Resources, and the Ministry of Health.

Its  activities will take place from May 11 to 13 , 2026 under the patronage of H.E. Eng. Masoud bin Said  Al Hashmi, Governor of South Al Batinah, and in the presence of Their Excellencies the Walis, military commanders, and a number of officials from government and private entities in the governorate.

The campaign aims to raise awareness among the community and stakeholders about the risks associated with severe weather conditions, tropical systems, and tsunami waves, while enhancing public understanding of the multi-hazard early warning system.

 It also seeks to provide comprehensive guidance on appropriate conduct during emergencies, strengthen community response capabilities, and improve individuals’ preparedness through drills and awareness activities.

In this regard, H.E. Eng. Masoud bin Said Al Hashmi, Governor of South Al Batinah, emphasized that the National Awareness Campaign on Tropical Weather Risks reflects the Sultanate of Oman’s proactive and strategic approach to dealing with climate-related phenomena.

He noted out that addressing climate challenges is no longer limited to emergency response alone, but has evolved into an integrated system based on awareness, training, and strengthened community partnership.

His Excellency also clarified that, the campaign seeks to instill a well-informed societal culture capable of dealing responsibly and confidently with climate changes, emphasizing that community awareness constitutes the first line of defense in reducing risks and protecting lives and property.

He affirmed that South Al Batinah Governorate believes in the importance of integrating roles among various government entities and the community, considering every individual a key partner in the prevention and response system. He also praised the efforts of the National Emergency Management Center and all participating and supporting entities for organizing the campaign and their continuous commitment to enhancing preparedness and community safety.

Colonel Zayed bin Hamad Al Junaibi, Head of the National Emergency Management Center, emphasized  that the National Awareness Campaign on the Risks of Tropical Weather Conditions and Tsunami Waves reflects the National Committee for Emergency Management’s commitment to strengthening community preparedness and raising awareness about emergency risks and response mechanisms.

 He noted that building a well-informed and capable society able to respond appropriately before, during, and after tropical weather events represents a fundamental pillar in reducing losses and safeguarding lives and property.

He explained that the campaign, implemented in partnership with several government entities and community institutions, aims to reinforce a culture of prevention and enhance institutional integration and community partnership in emergency management through various awareness programs, including seminars, lectures, evacuation drills, and accompanying exhibitions, thereby contributing to the establishment of a more effective and sustainable response system.

He added that dealing with tropical weather conditions is a shared responsibility that requires collective efforts and cooperation among all entities and individuals, stressing that prior awareness of risks and preventive measures significantly contributes to enhancing public safety and supporting sustainable development efforts across the governorates of the Sultanate of Oman.

The campaign route includes the Wilayats of Al Rustaq, Al Awabi, Nakhal, Wadi Al Maawil, Barka, and Al Musannah. It targets representatives from government and private entities in the governorate, as well as representatives of civil society organizations, associations, and charitable teams, guiding them toward the optimal handling of risks associated with these phenomena. The campaign will be implemented through four main pillars: meetings and seminars, practical drills, participation in various activities and events across the governorate, and awareness publications.

The first day of the campaign featured several lectures, working papers, and visual presentations covering topics such as the national emergency management framework in the Sultanate of Oman, operational procedures at the National Multi-Hazard Early Warning Center for issuing alerts related to tropical weather risks, emergency safety procedures, the role of dams in flood risk protection, and school safety and security measures, in addition to discussion sessions involving a number of specialists.

The symposium program also included the inauguration of the accompanying exhibition at the University of Technology and Applied Sciences in Al Rustaq, which will continue for three days. The exhibition features several educational and awareness corners aimed at enhancing community awareness of the risks posed by tropical weather conditions and tsunami waves, while introducing preventive measures and safe response practices during various emergency situations.

In this context, Abdullah bin Rashid Al Khudoori, Director General of Meteorology, clarified  that the accelerating climate challenges witnessed globally today require collective efforts and the strengthening of continuous awareness initiatives. He emphasized that the national campaign comes within the framework of raising community awareness about the risks of tropical weather conditions and methods of dealing with them.

He added that the campaign seeks to deliver clear and simplified scientific messages that contribute to promoting preventive behavior among various segments of society, thereby helping reduce risks resulting from different weather conditions.

 He pointed out that the Authority continues to develop the meteorological and early warning system through the adoption of the latest global technologies to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of alerts and ensure rapid response, thereby contributing to the protection of lives and property and strengthening preparedness for various climate phenomena.

The campaign activities include a number of field meetings and seminars, ongoing media awareness initiatives, emergency drills and simulation exercises, in addition to the accompanying awareness exhibition featuring various educational sections designed to promote safe behavior before, during, and after tropical weather conditions.
