Oman Marks World Tsunami Awareness Day to Promote Community Preparedness
The Sultanate of Oman will join the global observance of World Tsunami Awareness Day on, 5 November 2025, held this year under the theme “Be Tsunami Ready: Invest in Preparedness”.
This international day, designated by the United Nations, aims to raise global awareness of the risks posed by tsunamis and to underscore the importance of preparedness and effective planning to mitigate their impacts on lives and property.
The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), represented by the National Multi-Hazard Early Warning Center, attaches great importance to enhancing the tsunami early warning system through upgrading monitoring and detection technologies, and strengthening regional and international cooperation for real-time data and information exchange. These efforts ensure timely and accurate issuance of alerts in the event of any potential threat.
In coordination with the National Emergency Management Center and other relevant entities, the CAA also works to strengthen community and individual preparedness through regular drills, awareness programs, and training initiatives aimed at bolstering national capabilities in responding to natural hazards.
As part of its national awareness efforts, the CAA launched a series of field campaigns last year in several coastal governorates, including North Al Batinah, Dhofar, and South Al Sharqiyah, to raise community awareness of the risks associated with weather phenomena and tsunamis and the proper response measures to take when they occur.
These campaigns included awareness lectures for school students and local communities, as well as school evacuation drills carried out in collaboration with concerned authorities.
Several coastal areas also witnessed evacuation drills conducted jointly with the Civil Defense and Ambulance Authority, the National Emergency Management Center, the Ministry of Information, and the Ministry of Education, to enhance students’ and teachers’ understanding of safe behavior during tsunamis or flooding events and to instill a culture of quick and safe response.
This observance embodies Oman’s commitment to building communities that are aware of natural disaster risks and to promoting a culture of prevention and early response, contributing to the protection of lives and national assets.
The Civil Aviation Authority reaffirms its ongoing commitment to strengthening national capacities in early warning and disaster management, supporting international efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and reduce disaster risks, reflecting the Sultanate’s drive to enhance readiness and ensure the sustainability of its emergency and disaster management system at both national and international levels.
